Overview

John Haugh brings close to 40 years of high-stakes legal experience to his clients. He's a native Virginian and attended Virginia Commonwealth University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Justice Administration, magna cum laude.


After earning his doctorate from The Marshall Wythe School of Law at the College of William and Mary, John began his practice with a small general practice firm in Roanoke. His experience was diverse, handling a variety of case types in state and federal courts throughout the Commonwealth.


His professional highlights include:


  • In 1988, John joined the Hampton Commonwealth Attorney's Office. He handled a diverse caseload that included serious criminal traffic matters, such as DUI charges, to violent cases, including murder, manslaughter, rape, robbery, and drug charges. 


  • John also served on the faculty at the Hampton Roads Regional Police Academy,  where he taught classes on Constitutional Law related to Search and Seizure, the 5th and 6th Amendments, violent crimes, property crimes, and serious criminal traffic offenses.


  • In 1991, John joined the District Attorney's Office in York County, Pennsylvania, leading a team of attorneys, investigators, child advocates, and healthcare professionals in the investigation and prosecution of child sexual and physical abuse cases.


  • John was as a faculty member with the Pennsylvania District Attorney's Association, teaching workshops on trial advocacy skills and the investigation and prosecution of child homicide cases.


  • He also served on the Pennsylvania District Attorneys' Coalition on Child Abuse and the Pennsylvania Attorney General's Medical/Legal Advisory Board on Child Abuse.


  • In 1995, he returned to Hampton to serve as a Deputy Commonwealth Attorney, prosecuting cases in the Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court. John was later appointed as Chief Deputy, a position he served in for 15 years. He supervised a team of 15 attorneys and support staff as he continued to work on serious criminal cases, including three capital murder cases.


  • In 2012, John was appointed Interim Commonwealth Attorney after the retirement of the Honorable Linda Curtis.  Over the next two years, he served as both a Senior Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney and a Special Assistant United States Attorney, handling cases in both state and federal court.


  • In 2013, John was hired as the Chief Deputy of the Commonwealth Attorney's Office in Louisa County, Virginia.


  • In 2015, he joined the Virginia Attorney General's Office, prosecuting violent crimes, gang, and gun offenses in Norfolk, and held that position until retiring from public service.
